D a t a s o u r c e s Studies were identified by searching MEDLINE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, Web of Science, National Library of Medicine Gateway, Cardiosource, the Clinical Trials Registry, Clinicaltrials.gov, CRISP, the National Research Register, the GlaxoWellcome Clinical Trials Register, LILACS, OCLC ProceedingsFirst, and the National Health Service Economic Evaluation Database in September 2002. Conference proceedings and bibliographies of relevant papers were hand-searched, and experts, device manufacturers, and authors were contacted.

Use of the implantable cardioverter-defibrillator in patients with coronary artery spasm as the apparent cause of spontaneous life-threatening ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation: crossing the spasm sudden death chasm.
Large, randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that the implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) reduces sudden cardiac death mortality, and thereby all-cause mortality, in patients who have been resuscitated from an episode of spontaneous life-threatening ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF [secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death]) (2), and in certain pa...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Implantation of Cardioverter-Defibrillators Therapy in Patients with Non-Ischemic Heart Failure: an Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
OBJECTIVE Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator has become the first-line therapy for prevention of sudden cardiac death. Controversial results still exist regarding the effectiveness of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) in non-ischemic heart failure. METHODS The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central databases were searched for randomized trials comparing implantable cardioverter-d...
متن کاملExperience with implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy in elderly patients.
AIM Concern exists about the benefit of implantable defibrillator therapy in elderly patients. We assessed the utility of implantable defibrillator therapy and its effect on mortality in patients 70 years and older and compared results in this group to those in younger patients. METHODS AND RESULTS Thirty-two out of 200 consecutive patients (16%) were 70 years or older at the time of implanta...
متن کاملImplantable defibrillators for the prevention of mortality in patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
CONTEXT Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy is effective in primary and secondary prevention of sudden cardiac death among patients with prior myocardial infarction and depressed ejection fraction. However, conclusive evidence of survival benefit in patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) is still lacking. OBJECTIVE To determine whether ICD therapy reduces all-cause m...
متن کاملChronic Kidney Disease and Mortality in Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Recipients
Incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) remains high. Limited data is available about whether implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) can prevent arrhythmic death in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine the impact of CKD on all-cause and sudden cardiac death in ICD recipients. We evaluated 4...
